Walking Stops

1
Your starting point. Korkeavuorenkatu 23. Finland's design story from Aalto to today.
Founded in 1873, oldest design museum in the world. The 2018 reno by Japanese architect Hiroshi Naitō made the building itself a design object.
~15:30
2
Gallery + shop hybrid. Annankatu 9. Photography, ceramics, and small-batch objects by Finnish artists.
Opened by photographer Katja Hagelstam in 2012. Represents Helsinki's shift from mass-produced Marimekko to one-of-a-kind studio crafts.
~15:45
3
Esplanadi 18. Alvar Aalto's company, founded 1935. Stools, lighting, bentwood.
Aalto and his wife Aino started Artek to mass-produce modernist furniture that could actually be sat on. The Stool 60 (1933) has sold millions and is still made in Turku.
~16:05
4
Pohjoisesplanadi 33. Bold prints that defined Finnish identity in the 1960s.
Founded 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia. Jackie Kennedy wore Marimekko in 1960, making it global. The Unikko poppy print (1964) was so radical the founder banned florals.
~16:25
5
The green spine between design shops. Statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg (Finland's national poet).
The "Espa" is Helsinki's outdoor living room. In the 1980s, the park's eastern end near Kappeli restaurant was a discreet late-night meeting spot for Helsinki's gay scene — less visible than Kaivopuisto but closer to the bars.
~16:40
6
Eteläranta. 1889 iron-and-glass hall. Smoked vendace, archipelago bread, salmon soup.
Built when Finland was still under Russian rule. The vaulted cast-iron hall was the Baltic's most modern market when it opened. Look up at the original gas-lamp fixtures converted to electric.
~16:55
7
Pursimiehenkatu 29. Third-wave coffee, cardamom bun, Punavuori window-watching.
End here. Helsinki's coffee scene exploded post-2010, and Kaffa was one of the originals. The single-origin bar changes daily. The pulla is baked in-house.
